They say that the act of reading gives people more empathy and makes them more critical and reflective”. Do you think this is true?

I think by “critical” you’re referring to critical thinking, rather than judgmental kinda critical. So that’s the premise for my response.

I think it probably depends on what you’re reading.


Pop-culture crime, suspense or love drama novels?

Probably not so much.

However, if you’re reading topics that expand your mind, then I’d say there’s a better chance that statement is true. For instance, topics like:

  • Self-help or psychology.
  • Learning a new language, or new skills.
  • Cultivating an expanded view of your relationship with the divine.

A question to ask about what you’re reading is “is this expansive, or merely entertaining?”
